SPU Deemed Green

thumb-plant3SPU has been included in The Princeton Review’s Guide to 322 Green Colleges. The Guide looked for colleges that demonstrated a “strong commitment to sustainability in their academic offerings, campus infrastructure, activities and career preparation.” This follows in SPU’s pattern, the school recently achieving several green feats for the year of 2012. It was easy to spot a class centered around sustainability when I took a quick glance at what was available next quarter in the Engineering Science category (frightening and unknown territory for this English major), finding Alternative Energy Systems (EGR 3611). The class is described as an exploration of alternative energy sources and has an encouraging amount of seats open: zero.

In related good news, Seattle has been ranked as the fifth most energy-efficient city in the country by The American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy, falling behind Boston (1), Portland (2), and New York/San Francisco (tied for 3). Seattle, however, claimed the top spot in the category for building efficiency.

Big surprise right? Seattle being recognized as energy-efficient is kind of like Meryl Streep being recognized as a good actor (idea for new city tagline-Seattle: The Meryl Streep of Sustainability). But still, to be attending such a green college in such a green city; it’s a good feeling. To get in on the action, one thing you can do is bone up on what you should recycle, then start downing those pop cans so you can have the pleasure of dropping them in the bin and yellingbooyah
